On Reaching Bhubaneswar, We Were Welcomed By The WTP Officer And We Left For The Puri. We Checked In At The Hotel, Freshened Up And Explore City.

Puri, The Holy Land Of Jagannath, Also Known By The Popular Local Name Srikshetram, Has Many Ancient Names In Hindu Scriptures Such As The Rigveda, Matsya Purana, Brahma Purana, Narada Purana, Padma Purana, Skanda Purana, Kapila Purana And Niladrimahodaya. In The Rigveda, In Particular, It Is Mentioned As A Place Called Purushmandam-grama, Which Means The Place Where The Creator God Of The World - The Supreme Divinity Was Consecrated On An Altar Or Mandapam And Prayed To With Vedic Hymns. Over Time The Name Changed To Purushottama Puri And Then Shortened To Puri, And The Purusha Came To Be Known As Jagannath.

Puri Has Been Known By Many Names Since Ancient Times And Was Locally Known As "Shri Kshetra" And The Jagannath Temple Is Known As "Badadeula". Puri And The Jagannath Temple Were Invaded 18 Times By Muslim Rulers From The 7th Century AD To The Early 19th Century, With The Aim Of Looting The Treasures Of The Temple. Odisha, Including Puri And Its Temple, Was Part Of British India From 1803 Until India Gained Independence In August 1947. Even Though The Princely States Do Not Exist In India Today, The Heirs Of The Gajapati House Still Perform The Ritual Duties Of The Temple. The Temple Town Has Many Hindu Religious Mathas Or Monasteries. Sri Hari Is Said To Have Taken One Of His Minor Incarnations On This Divine Land, Along With The 5 Original Deities; Varuna (wind), Lake Pushkarini (water), Devanshu God Of Light (controller Of Climate And Weather), Jwalayantra (fire), Dharitri (earth).
