The Nagaur Fair is an important, though lesser-known, livestock and agricultural fair held in Nagaur, Rajasthan, in January or February, while the Pushkar Fair is a larger, internationally renowned camel and cattle fair held in Pushkar, Rajasthan, in October or November. The Nagaur Fair focuses on the sale of livestock like bullocks, camels, and sheep, along with spices, wooden items, and iron crafts. In contrast, the Pushkar Fair is famous for its massive scale, with tens of thousands of animals, numerous beauty contests for camels and moustaches, and cultural events like tug-of-war and folk performances.  
 

Nagaur Fair

Focus: Primarily a trading fair for livestock and agricultural goods, including bullocks, camels, sheep, and spices.

Activities: Features a variety of wooden and iron crafts, camel leather accessories, and cultural performances such as tug-of-war, camel dance, and horse dance.

Key Differences

Scale: Pushkar is significantly larger and more internationally recognized than Nagaur. 

Emphasis: While both are cattle fairs, Pushkar has a greater focus on tourism and has become a major cultural event. 

Timing: Nagaur is held in winter (Jan-Feb), while Pushkar takes place in autumn (Oct-Nov). 

The Historical and Cultural Significance of Nagaur Fair

The origins of the Nagaur Fair trace back several centuries, deeply intertwined with the agricultural and pastoral traditions of Rajasthan. Nagaur, strategically located between Jodhpur and Bikaner, has historically been a hub for trade and commerce. Over the years, the fair has evolved from being merely a livestock trading ground into a full-fledged cultural and tourism event.

The fair is organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Rajasthan, and attracts over 70,000 livestock, including bulls, camels, horses, and oxen. Farmers and herders from Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Gujarat arrive here to buy and sell their prized animals. The animals are meticulously groomed, adorned with colorful ornaments, and paraded around to attract potential buyers.
